Toffees Need New Manager Following Frank Lampard Sacking

After Frank Lampard was sacked as Everton boss on Monday, the club could look to the Argentine as his replacement. Farshad Moshiri has spoken with Bielsa about succeeding Lampard, but it’s unclear if he has the support of the entire Everton hierarchy.

Bielsa has been out of work since being sacked by Leeds United in February 2022. Everton are desperate for an upturn in form, with only three wins in the 2022/23 campaign so far. The club sit joint-bottom of the table, and a club famous for having never been relegated is dangerously at risk of losing that title.

Who is Marcelo Bielsa?

Marcelo Bielsa is a renowned Argentine football manager, who coached Leeds United from June 2018 until his dismissal last winter. Pep Guardiola has in the past described him as “the best in the world”. Bielsa is credited with inspiring his former players to later become managers, including Mauricio Pochettino, Diego Simeone and Marcelo Gallardo.

Before Leeds, Bielsa had coached many clubs around world football, including Athletic Bilbao, Newell’s Old Boys, and the Argentine and Chilean national teams. He was infamously part of the 2019 “Spygate” saga in which Leeds would spy on opposition teams’ training. The club were fined £200,000 for the incident.

Would Bielsa fit Everton?

Bielsa is generally viewed as a coach who requires time and training sessions to implement his style of football. Thrust into a mid-season relegation scrap, it’s difficult to see how a Bielsa-Everton partnership would work.

The club may be better off targeting an experienced relegation manager to steady the ship before moving for a more progressive manager, like Bielsa, in the summer.
