Shock Move – Leeds United Sell £18 Million International to Serie A Giants

Leeds United Diego Llorente

After an extended stint at Leeds United Diego Llorente is set to sign for Serie A side Roma, according to Phil Hay. In spite of a relatively weak run of form in recent months, the Spaniard with ten international caps is moving to the Italian side with the Yorkshire club recouping at least the initial fee they paid of £18 million in 2020.

How Was Diego Llorente at Leeds United?

Diego Llorente had a tough period at Elland Road. His first season was strong, with fans seeing him as one of the better defenders at the club. Since then a combination of poor form and injuries have led to him falling out of favour and ultimately moving away from the club. Roma can expect to receive a player of good quality with the occasional tendency towards chaotic decision-making, not ideal in a race for European football.

The Details of the Move

The Spanish centre-back had recently signed a new contract at Leeds, and this ultimately proved to be a way of building funds. With Bournemouth reportedly signing Matias Vina from the Italian club, Victor Orta and his team found themselves with a decision to make. If the club are able to sell the player for at least his initial transfer fee, this is an excellent choice. The deal starts as a loan with the option to buy at the end of the season.

Is Any More Leeds United Transfer Business Necessary?

Despite losing a centre-back, there is no need to scramble for a senior replacement. Jesse Marsch has Robin Koch, Liam Cooper, Pascal Struijk and Max Wober all capable of playing in the position, with Phil Hay also reporting the signing of young defender Diogo Monteiro. Llorente was rarely starting matches and added squad depth where it wasn’t necessarily vital. In spite of playing a big part under Marcelo Bielsa, this seems like a good time for a parting of the ways for the defender and the club.
