Manchester United are currently holding early discussions over a potential loan deal for £17.5 million-rated midfielder Houssem Aouar, according to journalist Jonathan Shrager.
Manchester United Looking to Sign Houssem Aouar After Marcel Sabitzer in Late January Transfer Drama
United Making Surprise Late Moves After Injury; Houssem Aouar Just One of Them
With January drawing to a close, Erik ten Hag’s side looked set to complete the season with Wout Weghorst and Jack Butland as their only two midseason additions.
However, following the announcement earlier on Tuesday that Christian Eriksen’s injury could see him out until May, there were suddenly loan deals for replacement midfielders in the works. Fabrizio Romano has now given his coveted “Here We Go” on Marcel Sabitzer’s loan move to Manchester, meaning they are now likely to finish the month with three new signings.
Despite this, it is not out of the question that a fourth could also be on his way to Old Trafford before the window slams shut. As Shrager has reported, Aouar may sign for United this transfer window in what would be a shocking turn of events.
Should the Red Devils manage to bring in Aouar, it could completely solve their current midfield crisis.
Even with Sabitzer likely to join, they will still only have three fit, senior central midfielders in their squad for the foreseeable future (Casemiro, Fred, Sabitzer), and if one of them falls to injury, it could cause a real problem for Ten Hag. Signing Aouar, though, would significantly decrease the risk that United’s midfield options become so short they have to dip into the reserves or play players out of position in crucial matches.
It is worth noting, though, that the Reds’ discussions over Aouar are still in their early stages, and the chances that the deal is pushed over the line before Tuesday night’s 11 pm GMT deadline are slim.
