’Scramble for His Signature Expected in the Summer’: Manchester United and Chelsea Target Rejects New Deal

David Raya

David Raya, Brentford’s in-form goalkeeper, has decided to put any contract talks on hold after rejecting a new deal in January 2023. The shot-stopper will have just one year left on his current deal, and a “scramble for his signature is expected in the summer.”

Interest from Top Clubs

Tottenham, Manchester United, and Chelsea have all been linked with the Spanish shot-stopper. It’s no secret that all three of these clubs have been searching for a new goalkeeper in recent times, and Raya’s impressive performances for the Bees have certainly caught their attention. Spurs No.1 Hugo Lloris is out with an injury at the moment. Moreover, his recent form has not been anything to write home about.

The Red Devils on the other hand are looking for a long-term replacement for David De Gea. The 32-year-old has been their main man between the sticks since 2011 and the club might look elsewhere to bring in a keeper who can play out from the back. Chelsea goalkeepers Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy have both struggled for form, which could see Graham Potter target a new goalkeeper in the summer.

David Raya’s Statement

The Spaniard himself has stated that now is not the right time to sign a contract. He told the PA news agency: “I’m really, really happy and right now I’m just thinking about doing the best for the team and trying to push for Europe.” He also added, “I was offered a new contract last year and one in January but we didn’t reach an agreement. I would like to see what happens in the summer, however, I’m happy at Brentford.”

Focus on the Team

For Raya, the most important thing right now is the team and the games. He said, “For now, a new contract is secondary, the most important thing is the team and the games. We’ll see where we are in May.” The 27-year-old’s impressive form for the Bees this season has been a major factor in their push for Europe. Thomas Frank’s side sit in seventh place in the table above the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea.

Raya has made many vital saves and has been a standout performer for the West London club. His performances have not gone unnoticed by the top clubs, who are reportedly interested in signing him in the summer. His focus remains on helping Brentford push for European football, but his future beyond this season remains to be seen.
