‘Negotiations Are Ongoing’: Romano Announces Possible Old Trafford Exit

Old Trafford - Rasmus Hojlund

Donny van de Beek, once heralded as the future of Manchester United’s midfield, could soon be on his way out from the club. Following his failure to establish himself as a first-team player, and an uneventful loan spell to Everton, Van de Beek sees his opportunities of playing in England starting to vanish.

The relief for the 26-year-old Dutchman is that there is still interest in him across Europe. Real Sociedad have inquired to Manchester United about attaining the services of the Ajax academy product. This report comes from a tweet made by Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano. The negotiations between United and Sociedad are ongoing and United hope that the departure of Van de Beek and Fred will see them able to further pursue Sofyan Amrabat.

Donny van der Beek: Failed to Live Up to the Hype

Stint In England Viewed Poorly

A member of the famed Ajax academy in Amsterdam, the midfielder, who can play in many different slots on the pitch, was expected to be a key addition to United when he arrived in 2020. Fresh off of a domestic treble, Van de Beek immediately took United to the Europa League Final, where they lost to Spanish club Villarreal in penalty kicks.

His time spent at Ajax and his somewhat successful first season at Old Trafford saw him gain nineteen caps with the Dutch national team. But starting with the 2021/22 season, things started to roll downhill for the player. Poor form and purchases of players meant to compete with him for his starting job saw the roster spot he coveted be given away.

Warning Had Been Sounded For Donny van de Beek

Back in December, when Van de Beek was back with United and contending again for a role with the club, one thing was made very clear to him. He would be given six months, and during that time, he would have to prove that he was worthy of wearing the Red Devils uniform.

Since that time, the former Dutch prodigy has not been able to improve his fortunes, and his form has not risen to the level that coach Erik ten Hag would believe is needed to keep him. A departure this summer looks increasingly likely.

Still, much of his career is in front of him. Sociedad can offer European football, and in a good year, contention to win either the Copa Del Rey or the Spanish Super Cup. Should a move to Spain reinvent the midfielder, Van de Beek could play well into his 30s and put his horrible experiences in England behind him.
