When asked about why Sancho was missing from the side, Ten Hag told reporters “You have to reach a level every day at Manchester United and we can make choices on the frontline, so for this game he wasn’t selected”.

In response, the winger shared a post on social media in an effort to rebuke his manager’s criticisms. One particularly noteworthy line of Sancho’s post read: “I believe there are other reasons for this matter that I won’t go into, I’ve been a scapegoat for a long time which isn’t fair”.

He went on to state his respect for the decisions of the coaching staff and show his appreciation and commitment to the club before claiming “I will continue to fight for this badge no matter what.”

Jadon Sancho’s Struggles Continue

The English forward has failed to find consistency since joining from Borussia Dortmund in a £73 million move in July 2021. He appeared to be given hope of winning Ten Hag’s favour after his head coach claimed he was a “brilliant footballer” following a crucial goal to save a point against local rivals Leeds last season.

Despite the praise and a promising pre-season tour, Sancho has struggled for minutes early in the 2023/24 Premier League campaign and was left out of the squad entirely for United’s trip to North London.

Manchester United Need to Regroup Following 3-1 Defeat

The international break could not come at a better time for the Red Devils, with the latest dressing room drama adding to the solemn mood at the club.

There were reasons for optimism leading up to their trip to the Emirates. Despite subpar performances, the Manchester side had picked up six points from three games and had only lost to an impressive Tottenham Hotspur under new manager Ange Postecoglou.

However, the dramatic way in which Arsenal defeated United and the spat between Sancho and his manager is sure to have soured the mood. Ten Hag and his coaching staff will need to use the international break to reevaluate the issues in his team’s tactical setup and find a way to boost morale in the squad.

His side returns to Old Trafford on September 16th, where they’ll face a Brighton and Hove Albion side flying high after their 3-1 win over Newcastle United on Saturday evening.
