Barcelona had to work smartly in mostly signing players on free transfers in the summer transfer window and Fabrizio Romano has now clarified the situation over Frenkie de Jong’s contract with the club.

Barcelona to Look Into Frenkie de Jong Contract Extension

Are Barcelona Actively Working on a New Deal for the Dutchman?

Romano said “my understanding”, that there is nothing really happening regarding a possible contract extension for Frenkie de Jong amid reports that he might be in line for a new deal. This comes after the Dutchman has enjoyed a superb start to the new season.

The La Liga club are not holding any negotiations with the Netherlands international over a new deal, indicates the journalist. Romano wrote in his CaughtOffside column: “His contract will be a topic for Barcelona in the next months but it’s not something imminent, Barca have to fix different situations with Financial Fair Play first, so it’s going to take some time.”

As Romano states, Barcelona are currently looking to fix the financial issues that held them back from splurging big money in the summer window. That includes trimming down their wage bill and cutting down on losses to avoid potential punishments from the La Liga or UEFA.

How Has De Jong Performed This Season?

The 26-year-old has played in every minute of his side’s La Liga games so far, scoring a goal and helping them win three of their first four games of the campaign. De Jong has also been performing really well for the Netherlands and helped them to win their last two Euro 2024 qualifiers during the September International break.

De Jong has come a long way since being strongly linked to a move to Manchester United last year to now being a pivotal part of Xavi Hernandez’s side. The Dutchman was even hailed for his “incredible” work last year by Louis van Gaal and remains a highly-rated player at Barcelona.

But unless they are able to fix their issues with the Financial Fair Play situation, Barcelona probably won’t be able to start talks to extend his contract beyond 2026.
