How Bayern Munich Have Lined Up Recently

Despite having changed formations for two of the last three matches, Bayern are likely to settle back into the 4-2-3-1, which has served them so well for the best part of nearly 15 years. Though their performance in the opening half of the 2-2 draw vs. RB Leipzig at the weekend was far from good, injuries and limited options in the squad, may well force the hand of coach Thomas Tuchel to pick the identical lineup that he did on Saturday.

In fact, the situation at centre-back, in particular, is so dire, that the club are seriously suggesting re-signing 35-year-old free-agent Jerome Boateng to give them depth in that crucial position. This would only impact German competitions though, as the squad for the Champions League group stage is already set.

Bayern took on Leipzig with Sven Ulreich in goal, Konrad Laimer and Alphonso Davies as fullbacks, Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-Jae as centre-backs, Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka in  the holding midfield roles, while Leroy Sané, Jamal Musiala, Kingsley Coman, and Harry Kane made up the front four. There is little indication that that could change.

Bayern Munich Recent Form and Tactics

Bayern really need to improve defensively. Four wins and two draws from the first six games in the Bundesliga, along with opening victories in UCL and the German Cup do not tell the whole story. The problem is and continues to be conceding too many easy goals. This is despite operating with two holding midfielders who should be shielding the defense in a 4-2-3-1 setup.

The 4-3 win over Manchester United put both their attacking quality and their defensive frailty on full display. That time out, they were lucky that their qualities slightly outweighed their problems against a Red Devils side in a crisis of their own. If the Bavarians want to reach the latter stages of this competition, that has to change.

Bayern Munich Injuries to Consider

Both Manuel Neuer and Matthijs de Ligt continue to be out injured. Serge Gnaby’s broken arm will also keep him out for some time.
