‘Perfect Player’ Holds the Key for Spurs Champions League Hopes

Tottenham Hotspur, Heung-Min Son

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur are flying high in the Premier League. At the time of writing, they sit 2nd in the table, under the treble-winning Manchester City. There are many reasons for this early success – the ‘feel good’ factor at the club brought by the likeable Ange Postecoglu, the return of attacking, free-flowing football after years of more defensive tactics or even the addition of James Maddison, a player who plays with the freedom and guile that is rarely seen nowadays. All these reasons have played a vital role in their impressive start, but the icing on the cake has been the performances of their new captain, Son Heung-min.

New Captain Son Heung-min Impresses for Tottenham Hotspur

Success for Son Heung-min in Talisman Role up Front

Son is no stranger to leading the attack, having done so in previous seasons in the absence of the now departed Harry Kane and for the South Korean national team – who he also captains. So far this season, he has started as the central striker in four league games and has scored six goals. He is regarded as an impressive finisher, having over-performed his expected goals for the last eight seasons. However, it’s more than this devastating finishing that has made him the perfect Postecoglou striker.

In the post-match press conference after the 5-2 win at Burnley, Postecoglou stated that the South Korean international previously described as the “perfect player” was suited to his system because of his attributes as a football player. He noted that his movement and ability to play on the shoulder of the defenders was ideal for the style of play. This in addition to his intelligence, positioning, and timing of his runs and his previously mentioned lethal finishing, make him the ideal striker for the Australian.

Perfect Postecoglou Striker

This movement was on display against Arsenal for his first goal. Surrounded by five defenders, Son made a quick incisive sprint to the six-yard box while Maddison was turning Saka inside out, allowing the former Leicester City man to find him in the perfect position to slot home the equaliser. His pace behind the defence was on display in the now-controversial 2-1 win at home to Liverpool. For the game’s opener, Maddison dropped deep and found Richarlison with a clever ball into the left half-space, who then found Son after the Korean had made a darting run into the six-yard box between both Liverpool central defenders, finishing an excellent team move.

Much was made of the departure of Harry Kane and where that would leave Tottenham. Posteglou is playing a system – suited to the Premier League, with many defences in the league operating with a high defensive line.

There is no doubt that a revolution is happening in North London, and the Spurs skipper seems to be leading the charge from the front. Chelsea and Manchester United are struggling for consistency, and Arsenal dealing with the demands of Champions League commitments for the first time in six years. Liverpool and Manchester City are experiencing injury and suspension issues. Spurs will look to build on their bright start and once again challenge for a top-four position.
