Tottenham Hotspur’s week could go from bad to worse. Spurs suffered a heartbreaking loss to Manchester City in the FA Cup on Friday. Ange Postecoglou hoped that the absence of Erling Haaland would have given his club the boost they needed, but the Sky Blues prevailed in a tight match. On Sunday their top target 18-year-old Antonio Nusa signed with Brentford, while a report from Germany has now revealed that Pierre-Emile Højbjerg could make a late January exit from north London.

Journalist Updates Danish Player’s Transfer Status

Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) that “Many clubs have inquired about” Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg. Lyon were reported to have made an offer, but Spurs rejected the French outfit’s approach. The 28-year-old is still receiving interest from other clubs, with his vast experience and technical prowess attracting many top sides, who believe he can be a difference maker.

Plettenberg noted that the veteran Danish international “is still open for a new challenge in winter.” Højbjerg’s departure will have to materialise quickly, as the January transfer window ends this week and a priority destination is yet to be decided on. Ange Postecoglou has fielded the former Bayern Munich player 23 times in all competitions this season but may wish to force a move to alleviate FFP concerns should they decide to go through with a shock move for Conor Gallagher.

Højbjerg’s Rise to Prominence & A Potential Juventus Move

Bayern poached Højbjerg from Brondby’s academy in 2012. He initially played for their reserve squad, but still participated with the senior side enough to get winner’s medals for their conquests in the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal and Club World Cup. Unable to establish himself as a starter with the Munich outfit, the Dane endured loans to Augsburg and Schalke before joining Southampton in 2016.

Højbjerg’s time with Southampton was fruitful and helped him established himself as a Premier League regular and earned a move to Tottenham in 2020. His mixture of physicality and tenacity with technical ability make him a perfect fit for the English top division and cemented him as a key player for the club until this summer. Rumoured to be a Juventus target in September, the Danish midfielder has been praised by manager Ange Postecoglou, who told the media in October that he had been a “contributor all year” and that he was “vital” when coming into the side.
