Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s purchase of a 25% stake in Manchester United has started to steer the English giants in a new direction. Erik ten Hag’s squad has seen a rise in form in the Premier League. A horrid Champions League campaign has been forgotten in the hopes of the Red Devils storming into the top spots. One decision the Ineos CEO has left open to discussion is the return from exile of one of the Manchester outfit’s young players, Mason Greenwood.

“Will Decide When the Time Is Right”
Journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on Ratcliffe’s words from a media gathering at the INEOS offices. The Italian’s tweet relayed the new United part-owner’s words regarding the situation of forward Mason Greenwood. Stated clearly, the 71-year-old businessman said “He’s a Man United player.”

Greenwood had sexual assault charges brought against him in 2022, but were subsequently dropped last year. United faced a tough decision on the then-21-year-old’s status, initially revealing they would hold onto the player. Ultimately, the Red Devils would opt to loan him to Spain with a Getafe deal signed this past summer.

Ratcliffe noted that a final move regarding the former Jimmy Murphy award winner will not come for some time. It will be another tough decision for United to make on Greenwood, with the new owner stating “We need to look at facts, judge fairly and take into consideration what the values of the club are”.

Greenwood has netted seven times in 24 matches during his stay in Spain. He made his England senior team debut in 2020 thanks to impressive 2019/20 and 2020/21 campaigns which saw him score 17 and 12 goals respectively. Romano further reported that Ratcliffe believed the club “will decide” on the “massive talent’s” future when the time is right.
