How Canada Have Lined up Recently
Marsch’s first game in charge for Canada was a 4-0 defeat to Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands, in which Marsch played a 4-4-2 formation. Minnesota United’s Dayne St. Clair started in goal. This was his fifth start for the Maple Leafs with his last start coming against the United States in July 2023 in a penalty shootout defeat in the CONCACAF Gold Cup Quarter-Finals.
However, in their last match, Maxime Crepeau started, earning a clean sheet and a man-of-the-match performance against France in Bordeaux. Crepeau is expected to keep his place in the Copa America.
Marsch has kept a 4-4-2 in their latest two matches and the back four has been consistent. Alphonso Davies is the mainstay at the left back. The Bayern Munich man was named as captain by Marsch and will earn his 50th cap for Canada if he plays all of Canada’s group-stage matches.

Derek Cornelius and Moise Bombito are the centre-back pairing. Celtic right-back Alistair Johnston is a constant for the national team yet has only played a full match once in Canada’s last five matches.
The midfield has also been consistent. Liam Millar started both matches under Marsch’s reign yet was substituted at halftime against the Netherlands. FC Porto’s Stephen Eustaquio and Watford’s Ismael Kone are stabled in midfield. Tajon Buchanan also played the last two matches, resulting in Buchanan starting more matches for his country rather than his club.
The front two remained the same in both friendlies with a partnership between Lille’s Jonathan David and Mallorca’s Cyle Larin. Larin was substituted in both matches for Toronto’s Jonathan Osorio.
Canada Recent Form
The 49th best-ranked side according to the FIFA World Rankings has had mixed fortunes recently. In their last six matches, the Maple Leafs have only won twice, with one of those occasions being the first leg against Jamaica and they went on to lose the tie on away goals.
After a very disappointing Gold Cup, where Herdman’s Canada drew to Guadeloupe (a non-FIFA recognized French territory which is 6,133 times smaller than Canada) Herdman resigned to take over Bob Bradley’s Toronto FC.
This led to Mauro Biello taking over as an interim manager. During Biello’s reign, his side won twice and lost twice, but ultimately failed to advance to the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Nations League. This was due to Canada drawing 4 – 4 to Jamaica on aggregate, losing on away goals. This loss on home soil from a winning position in the first leg put Biello’s job on the line.

After ultimately beating Trinidad and Tobago in Dallas, Canada qualified for the 2024 Copa America. Canada dominated the match with 61% possession and 16 shots with 6 on target. This was the first time both nations had faced each other.
However, Canada has yet to win under Marsch. Their first game under the American was a 4-0 defeat to The Netherlands in Feyenoord. However, the following match was an impressive 0-0 draw against France where they had 49%. They will be hoping to impress against a side that has remained unbeaten in their last five.
Injury News
As expected, there are no injuries to report for Marsch’s side. His national team selection was quite routine, with no injuries hindering his selection for Canada’s first-ever time competing in Copa America. His side will play the opening game of the tournament against World Champions and holders Argentina.
