Since Mauro Biello was replaced by Marsch, Canada have always opted for a 4-4-2, with a routine lineup. Maxime Crepeau started Canada’s most recent matches, earning a clean sheet and a man-of-the-match performance against France and also started against Argentina, producing many saves in the match.
The back four has been the same since Biello left. Alphonso Davies is the first choice left back and their star player was named captain before the Copa America. Davies is one game away from his 50th international cap.

Moise Bombito and Derek Cornelius are the centre-back duo in Canada’s system. Celtic right-back Alistair Johnston is a constant for the national team and made the most interceptions against Argentina
Liam Millar starts at left midfield. The Basel man scored five goals for Preston North End on his loan spell at Deepdale. He was replaced late in the match by Jonathan Osario. FC Porto’s Stephen Eustaquio plays alongside Watford’s Ismael Kone under Marsch’s system. Canada’s midfield is completed by Tajon Buchanan playing on the right. He was the most accurate passer in the match to play more than 45 minutes.
Lille’s Jonathan David and Mallorca’s Cyle Larin play up in an upfront partnership. David scored 26 goals in all competitions for Lille this season with Larin scoring seven in all competitions for Mallorca. Larin was replaced in the 80’ minute by Toronto’s Richie Larin.
Recent Form
After Englishman John Herdman departed the Canadian national team for MLS Franchise Toronto FC, the Canadian national team were managed by interim coach and now-assistant Biello. Under his management, they won two out of four matches, yet one of those wins came in a two-legged match against Jamaica in which they ultimately lost the tie at home in Toronto.
Canada failed to qualify for the Copa America on the first time of asking, losing the CONCACAF Nations League Quarter Final to Jamaica on away goals, then beat Trinidad and Tobago in a one-legged affair to qualify.

Since then, former Leeds United and RB Leipzig manager Marsch was appointed. He had previously had managerial experience in Canada, managing Montreal Impact (rebranded as CF Montreal) in 2012. Since his replacement, the Maple Leafs have played three matches, including the Copa America opener against holders and World Champions Argentina, in which they are yet to win.
Despite this, since this appointment, all national team matches have come against the top seven ranked nations according to the FIFA World Rankings.
Marsch’s first game as coach came against the Netherlands, in which Canada lost 4-0. In this onw, the Maple Leafs had 39% possession and despite the scoreline, it was 0-0 at halftime. However, they were dominated in the match, with the Dutch squad having 20 shots with 11 on target, almost double the amount of Canada. However, in their second and final friendly, Canada played a goalless draw against World Cup finalists France in Bordeaux.

In this match, possession was practically even with France enjoying 51% of the ball. France enjoyed 13 shots with four on target. Canada had seven shots but none on target against arguably France’s strongest side without Kylian Mbappe.
Their opening Copa America match against Argentina was closely contested as well. Canada enjoyed two big chances in which both were squandered and had a controversial penalty appeal rejected in the first half. Argentina did enjoy more of the ball and had an xG of 3.02 to 1.16 and more possession but the Maple Leafs proved to be a tough opposition. Canada enjoyed more shots against Argentina than Peru did against Chile in Dallas, Texas.
Injury News
As expected, there are no injuries to report for Marsch’s side. His National team selection was quite routine, with no injuries hindering his selection for Canada’s first-ever time competing in Copa America. His side will play the opening game of the tournament against World Champions and holders Argentina. This isn’t the case for their opponents, with Fossati’s side having two injuries in the squad
