Canada Predicted Lineup vs Uruguay
How Canada has Lined up recently
Goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau has started every game for Canada this tournament and has played a pivotal role in the Maple Leafs’ progression. The Portland Timbers goalkeeper was Canada’s highest-rated player in the group stages, keeping two clean sheets out of three matches, which helped Canada progress from the knockout stages for the first time in their Copa America debut. In the opening match against Scaloni’s Argentina, Crepeau saved six shots in total and was successful in starting two counterattacks.

Crepeau played a pivotal role in the win over Group B winners Venezuela in the quarter-finals. Despite being at fault for Soloman Rondon’s second-half equaliser, he saved two penalties in the shootout. He has been helped by a solid and consistent defence in front of him. Captain Alphonso Davies has started all group games so far, making his 50th cap for Canada in the goalless draw against Chile in the final group stage match. He picked up a knock against Argentina and was substituted in the 71st minute. This was the first time Marsch had subbed him off since becoming Canada manager earlier in the year. Colorado Rapids’ Moise Bombito and Malmo’s Derek Cornelius have started every game as centre-backs so far. Bombito has played every minute so far, with Cornelius being subbed at halftime against Peru. Alistair Johnstone has played every minute at right back.

Despite switching to a 4-2-3-1 against Venezuela, Jesse Marsch switched to a traditional 4-4-2 against Argentina. Nashville’s Jacob Shaffelburg started at left midfield, replacing the injured Tajon Buchanan. This was only Shaffelburg’s third start in the tournament but he has proved very effective, scoring against Venezuela and getting the assist for the winner against Peru. FC Porto’s Stephen Eustaquio started again alongside Ismaël Koné who moved from Watford to Marseille this summer. Toronto’s Richie Laryea started at right midfield, yet he was replaced by Liam Miller after Lionel Messi doubled Argentina’s lead.
Marsch returned to his typical upfront partnership between Lille’s Jonathan David and Mallorca’s Cyle Larin. Jonathan David has played every minute in the Copa America and scored the winner against Peru. The same cannot be said for Cyle Larin, who despite starting the last two games and creating promising chances, has not completed a full 90 minutes for Canada under Marsch as of yet. He has started 70 games for Canada, scoring 29 goals.
Recent Form
For the first time in their history, Canada qualified from the group stage in their debut Copa America. In their first match, Canada lost 2-0 to holders Argentina in Atlanta. Canada enjoyed two big chances in which both were squandered and had a controversial penalty appeal rejected in the first half. Argentina did enjoy more of the ball and had an xG of 3.02 to 1.16 and more possession but the Maple Leafs proved to be a tough opposition. Against Peru however, Canada got their first win under Jesse Marsch. Despite the match being even for the first half in terms of possession and shots. It was the goal in the 77th minute that was most significant, giving Marsch’s side all three points. In their final group match, Canada secured qualification to the next round with a goalless draw against a Chile side that had failed to score throughout the tournament.

Against Venezuela, Canada secured a win on penalties, thanks to goalkeeper Crepeau saving two penalties against the Group B winners. Venezuela controlled more of the ball but the better chances fell to Canada who had 16 shots compared to Venezuela’s 15. However, Canada fell to Argentina in the semi-finals in New Jersey. In this match, Canada had 49% possession to Argentina’s 51%. However Argentina were the better side, having eleven shots to Canada’s nine, and Scaloni’s side had an xG of 2.2 to Canada’s 0.8. Despite both sides having two shots on target, it was Argentina who were more clinical, and they got one step closer to defending their crown.
Injury and Suspension News
Marsch has one injury to deal with. Tajon Buchanan was taken away in an ambulance after a significant lower leg injury during training. A regular for the national team, he now has 41 caps but will miss one of the most significant matches in his career. Davies also picked up an ankle injury against Argentina but isn’t ruled out against Uruguay
