It now appears that Chelsea’s Deivid Washington will not get his summer move, and will remain in West London for the 2024/25 season – or at least until January.

L’Equipe had previously reported that Chelsea were finalising a £17.6 million sale for Washington to Strasbourg. The striker was ready to sign a five-year contract at the Blues’ sister club, where he could play a healthy number of minutes and showcase his talent in a perfectly competitive league. However, this transfer was not to be.

After this fell through, it was reported that the Brazilian would join Hull City on loan in the Championship. This would have provided invaluable experience, as we’ve seen countless players develop excellently in the second tier. However, Fabrizio Romano has now reported that a deal “will not happen”.

What Does Deivid Washington Do Now?

Washington will stay at Chelsea, but will have no hopes of playing Premier League minutes this season. Their attack already had strong depth, with Nicolas Jackson, Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke, and Cole Palmer. Neither of these four have left, but Joao Felix, Pedro Neto, Marc Guiu, and Omari Kellyman have all joined. It seems impossible for the 19-year-old to break into the starting lineup in any game this season.

The “prodigy” can, however, play for their academy. Last season, he scored an impressive ten times in just 16 games. The Premier League 2 is a good league to gain experience and showcase a youngster’s ability. Maybe in January, a club from the English Football League will recognise his talents and gamble on a loan spell.
