It is difficult to accurately assess what Howe plans to do with Tonali, given that he has only started five league matches since he arrived from AC Milan. Fellow midfielder Joelinton was out for most of this period, so Howe barely had a chance to deploy both players together.

However, Sean Longstaff was preferred over Tonali for the most recent fixture against Tottenham Hotspur. This could in part be due to a lack of match fitness. Given the injury issues that plagued the Magpies last season, Howe will be wary of rushing players back too quickly.
With Willock out in the short-term, Tonali hopes to compete with Longstaff for that final midfield spot. The 24-year-old offers more creative freedom and has a higher performance ceiling. He will back himself to become a regular starter within the next few weeks.

During his time at AC Milan, Tonali was renowned for his chance creation. He was one of the best in the league for expected assists and shot creating actions. This complements Joelinton’s tough tackling and Guimaraes’ tendency to dictate play from a deeper position.
This trio will form a more workmanlike midfield rather than one that provides a direct goal threat. This plays into Howe’s hands, as he prefers possession-based football. The goals and chance creation will come more from Howe’s wingers.
Tonali’s ability to drift into pockets of space, combined with his excellent vision, will help stretch opposition defences. Traditional wingers such as Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes relish receiving the ball out wide, where they can drive at full-backs or put crosses in.

Moreover, Alexander Isak can benefit from this too. The Swede is a well-rounded striker who thrives off both through balls and crosses. Tonali’s passing style can cater to both aspects of his game.

After a stellar 2022/23 season, Newcastle underwhelmed with their seventh-placed finish. Injuries blighted their campaign and returning players such as Tonali gives Newcastle’s squad a refreshed look, in spite of their lack of signings.
Tottenham’s transition period, alongside the uncertainties surrounding Manchester United and Chelsea’s form, leaves the door wide open for a handful of teams to challenge for European football.

Aston Villa capitalised on this last season, as did Newcastle the year before. The Magpies will approach this season with a more refreshed outlook as they do not have to juggle European football with their domestic commitments.
A returning player like Tonali is as good as a new signing. Newcastle attracted criticism for their lack of summer signings, including missing out on a star centre-back, despite transfer links. However, a fresh, injury-free squad will have enough depth to remain competitive throughout the season.
