What Did Southgate Have To Say About His Future?
Southgate has been out of a job since the summer after he opted to step down from his role as England manager after guiding them to the Euro 2024 final, where they ultimately came up short and lost to Spain. He ended an eight-year stint with the Three Lions, during which he guided them to the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and also the Euro 2020 final.

The Englishman has been strongly linked to Manchester United all through this year, with reports claiming him to be Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s top choice to potentially replace Ten Hag.
Southgate has put a dampener on those speculations, as he spoke about his future and told the European Club Association’s general assembly: “Sometimes when you are in a big role you don’t realise the weight until it’s gone. It is one of those jobs where everybody has an opinion. I am enjoying my life so there is no rush. For 11 years I committed fully to the national federation. I won’t coach in the next year for sure. I am certain of that. When you come out of a big role you need to give your body time, your mind time.”
Could Southgate Return To Club Football?
He also spoke about the possibility of returning to manage a club in the near future, having already had a stint as Middlesbrough coach. Southgate added: ” [A return to] club football? Depending on what role that is. have been fortunate to have worked with fantastic players. You’ve got to have excitement, passion to go to work every day. It is unlikely to be another national federation. England was from the heart.”

It seems that the English manager isn’t against the possibility of managing a club again, which means United might keep an eye on him for the foreseeable future. Ten Hag is reportedly safe from being sacked at the moment, but he needs to significantly improve the Red Devils form after only being able to guide them to three wins in 11 matches so far in the 2024/25 campaign.
