Bayern Munich Contracts Expiring

Over the last year or so, we have reported on some of the things that could undermine Bayern Munich’s stability and their continued ability to dominate the German game and remain competitive in Europe and beyond. In doing so, we have stressed that the club’s problems are largely down to the lack of clear leadership in the front office and the board. Today, we will focus on a specific issue resulting from that, which will impact the team on the field in the near future. Many contracts of players are expiring in either of the next two summers. First, let’s look at the Bayern Munich contracts expiring in 2025.

Leroy Sané, Joshua Kimmich, Alphonso Davies, Eric Dier, Thomas Müller, Manuel Neuer, and Sven Ulreich all have expiring contracts in the summer. All of these players are either key performers, or valuable squad players. In the case of Müller, he is an absolute team leader; even at age 35 his words carry a lot of weight particularly in the dressing room. At the same time, he is also always able to perform when called upon.

Meanwhile, Sané is a great player who unfortunately never showed his full potential for an entire season since arriving at Bayern in 2020. Injuries and dips in form keep causing setback after setback for the German international. The Bavarians also currently have many options on the flanks, but he is always a good player to have in the team.

Kimmich and Davies are important players for Bayern, though there are also many other clubs vying for their services, especially if they can sign them on a free transfer. Dier was a great addition to the squad when he arrived in January of this year. Yet, new coach Vincent Kompany favours others as his centre-back pairing,

As for the goalkeepers, an argument could be made that in 2014, Neuer was the best goalkeeper of all time, because of how he revolutionised how the position is played.

Ten years and multiple major injuries later, he just isn’t the same. Ulreich was Neuer’s reliable backup for years, but he is 36 years old, just two years younger than the Bayern number one.

Jamal Musiala, Dayot Upamecano, Serge Gnabry, Leon Goretzka, and Raphaël Guerreiro all have contracts expiring in 2026.

Of these players, only Musiala would be irreplaceable. Guerreiro is a great asset, largely due to his versatility, as he can play on either flank of the back four. Upamecano is not a consistent enough performer at the top level, while Gnabry also has too many ups and downs.

Goretzka on the other hand, has been on the chopping block since last summer.

Final Thoughts

The club want to restructure their salary list in the near future. They will have some difficult choices to make with many of these contracts expiring soon. Hopefully, they are able to choose wisely for the football and financial health of Bayern. It is too many quick expirations, but that is solely the fault of the leadership.
