Atlético Madrid President Clears Up Diego Simeone Replacement Talk
Firm Comments Leave Reporters Wanting More
Speaking to reporters in Prague ahead of Atlético Madrid’s Champions League match with Sparta Praha, club President Enrique Cerezo has shut down any rumours that manager Simeone might leave. He assured that, “Neither the manager nor anyone will leave,” going on to say that, “Everyone is happy.”
It is unclear if by “anyone” he is referring to players or club staff in addition to the manager. One reporter followed up asking if the club’s sporting director, Andrea Berta, will leave, to which Cerezo chose to respond by asking, “Why are we here today? To speak about the match or the sporting director?”

In recent weeks, it has surfaced that the departure of Berta is almost certain, either at the end of the season or sooner. As for Simeone, there have been reports coming from sources of varying reliability that Los Colchoneros have pinpointed Unai Emery as the successor to the current manager.
Stasis At Atleti?
It’s no secret that there appears to be a feel of ‘Wenger in his twilight Arsenal years’ at Atlético Madrid in the last few seasons. While Los Rojiblancos were crowned La Liga champions in 2021, they have had little to shout about since then.

Each season (usually around this time), question marks appear as to whether the current campaign is to be Simeone’s last. These typically succeed a drop in form, which is then answered with a Champions League place secured and a mediocre run in Europe to wrap up the term. Sound familiar?
If we are to draw up Wenger-Simeone comparisons, then we can mention that upon completing 700 games in charge of Atleti, El Cholo has recorded six more victories than the Frenchman had at the same stage with Arsenal.
Whatever may come of the future at the Estadio Metropolitano, Atleti will struggle to find anyone close to achieving what Simeone has. For now, at least according to the president, it seems the time for change isn’t quite yet upon us.
