Adding Competition to the Defence
Formerly of Barnsley and Swansea City, Mawson is a player who will add a great deal of competition to the Bristol City defence. The 26-year-old has Nathan Baker, Tomas Kalas, Taylor Moore and Zak Vyner to compete with. However, given his Premier League experience and previous pedigree, this is an excellent signing for a Championship side and he has the ability to go straight into the starting 11.
While with Swansea in the Premier League, Mawson was in the England U21 side and he was also called up to the senior side for the friendly matches against the Netherlands and Italy just before the 2018 World Cup. While he did not make an appearance in either of those matches, there were plenty of calls for him to be included in Gareth Southgate’s final 23-man squad for the tournament.
Mawson’s Downfall
Mawson left Swansea in 2018 following their relegation from the Premier League and signed on a £20 million deal for Fulham, who had just earned promotion back to the top flight via the play-offs.
It was not a successful return to England’s top tier, though, as Mawson and Fulham were relegated straight back to the Championship after a dire season.
The defender lost his place in the team under Scott Parker, coming in behind Michael Hector and Tim Ream in the pecking order. He featured 27 times last season but they were, largely, as a substitute.
With Fulham now back in the Premier League once again, this is another chance for Mawson to prove himself and get his career back on track.
