Josep Bartomeu and his board of directors have resigned from their positions at Barcelona. The much-maligned President was in the final year of his five-year term and had been facing a no-confidence vote to take place in the next week. But he and his board are finally gone and begin to rebuild a club that has fallen from the top.
Josep Bartomeu Resigns as President of Barcelona
Key Flashpoints as Bartomeu and Board of Directors Resign
The process began in August when Barcelona was handed their embarrassing 2-8 loss against Bayern Munich in the Champions League. But there were so many events to get here; Barcelona fans were desperate for Bartomeu to resign well before that.
There were so many awful moments; this includes the Neymar sale, the losses in the Champions League to Roma and Liverpool and the Copa Del Rey loss to Valencia. Those were all chances to Josep Bartomeu to resign. Even at the end of last season would’ve been a great time. The club went trophyless for the first time since 2007-2008 and reported a €97 million loss as well.
But in the end, it was a rapid succession of terrible events that got them out. It started with Lionel Messi‘s Burofax and the ensuing drama over him leaving. Then the elections were moved up from June of next year to March of next year. Since then Barcelona has gotten off to their worst league start sine 1987-1988 while @MesQueUnaMocio collected enough signatures for a vote of no confidence to be held. They tried to petition to the Catalan government to prevent the vote. However, they failed and it was set to begin on November 1st.
He even said in a press conference yesterday that he had not even thought about resigning. They knew they were gone, the fans would’ve been waving plenty of white handkerchiefs had they been allowed in the Camp Nou. But now the process of finding a replacement can begin.
This current board has 90 days to call elections for a new president and board. A temporary board will run the club in the meantime. The new executive board should be in place by the end of the year or early January 2021.
