Fletcher a ‘Great Addition’
The Scotsman will have spent four years playing alongside current United head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before the latter retired from playing in 2007. The pair are both considered among the best to have played for the club in the Premier League era and Solskjaer is happy to be reunited with him.
He told the club website: “Darren has the United DNA running through his veins and he knows exactly what it takes to be a Manchester United player.
“He is at the start of his coaching career and his experience both on and off the pitch along with his winning mentality, commitment and hard work will be a great addition to the staff.”
Fletcher himself added: “I am delighted to be returning to the club as a first-team coach.
“It’s a very exciting time for this young team and I am looking forward to taking the next steps in my coaching career by working with Ole and his staff.”
United Career
In his playing days at the club, Fletcher was a regular in the United teams managed by Sir Alex Ferguson and won numerous honours at the club. He was part of the sides which won five Premier League titles, an FA Cup, two League Cups, the Champions League and the Club World Cup.
In a 2019 interview, Fletcher expressed a desire to go into management in the future, and he took the role of United’s U16 coach in October of last year before this promotion into the first-team set-up.
