What The Bookies Are Saying

The Burnley Express recently pointed out that bookies listed two teams as having a chance to sign Deeney this month: the Baggies and the Clarets. Whether or not a potential move is on a loan deal or permanent basis is not specified.

SkyBet currently lists the odds of Deeney heading to Sam Allardyce’s side this transfer window at 3/1 (a 25% chance of happening). Burnley have odds of 12/1 (7.7% chance). Deeney’s boyhood club, Birmingham City, are given 4/1 odds (20% chance of happening). Birmingham are always linked with Deeney due to his close connection to the club.

West Bromwich Albion Interest

After Watford’s relegation, Deeney was linked with a host of Premier League clubs. West Brom were one such club favored for his signature.

Slaven Bilic, the Baggies’ manager at the time, knew he needed more goal-scorers in his squad. After all, the C]club’s top-scorers in their promotion campaign had ten goals each, which is not resounding by any means. The Baggies eventually signed Huddersfield Town striker Karlan Grant.

Now under the management of Allardyce, West Brom are still struggling to find the back of the net. They average .79 goals-per-match, while Grant only has one goal this season. If the Baggies are to stay up, they need attacking reinforcements. With the recent departure of Charlie Austin to Queens Park Rangers, there is space to be filled in the striker department.

Burnley’s Potential Move

Although no longer favourites for Deeney’s signature, Burnley were the clear-cut favorites in the summer. This goes down to the link between player and manager, as Deeney and Dyche once worked together at Vicarage Road.

Like West Brom, Burnley’s goal-scoring record is poor. Averaging .53 goals-per-game, Dyche knows his attack needs a boost. Former Hornets striker Matej Vydra is potentially on his way out, so room for Deeney is present. Moreover, Burnley’s physical playing-style which calls for strikers to hold up the play suits Deeney’s style.

Betting Odds are Speculative as Deeney is Set to Stay Put

Although West Bromwich Albion and Burnley may consider moves for Deeney, the likelihood Deeney leaves is slim.

The Hornets skipper, who is loving life under new manager Xisco Munoz, is content at Vicarage Road. Between the Hornets’ newfound form, the push for promotion, and the positive environment Xisco has implemented, it would be hard for Deeney to convince himself to make a move to a club in a relegation scrap – especially considering the club he has been with since 2010 is looking up.
