Arsenal midfielder Reiss Nelson may be on the move soon to join a Championship club on loan. According to Mark Mann-Bryans, the Premier League outfit are looking to ensure the 21-year-old continues to receive game time as he develops and a loan move to the English second division could accomplish this. Nelson has made a total of just nine appearances in all competitions for Arsenal’s first team in the 2020/21 campaign.
Arsenal Look to Secure Championship Loan Move for Reiss Nelson
Ensuring Continued Development
A loan move for Nelson would make sense based on the current situation with the number of appearances he’s making for the Arsenal first team. So far in the 2020/21 season, Nelson has made just two Premier League appearances along with four Europa League appearances. His other three appearances have come in the domestic cup competitions.
There won’t be as many opportunities for involvement in the remaining schedule as the Europa League group stage has concluded. For this reason, a loan to a Championship club would offer Nelson the opportunity to make consistent appearances in a competitive league.
New Signing Possibly on the Way
With the recent transfer rumours pointing to the signing of Martin Ødegaard on loan, this could further limit the possibility of Nelson making appearances for Arsenal’s first team in the near future. Nelson can play as an attacking midfielder or on the wings and Ødegaard can occupy these same roles as well. If Ødegaard arrives at Arsenal for the remainder of the campaign, then Mikel Arteta will most likely be looking to give the Norwegian midfielder consistent appearances.
A Successful Loan for Nelson Could be Very Beneficial
If Nelson can move to a Championship club on loan, it could do wonders for his continued development. The Gunners had recent success with Emile Smith-Rowe’s loan to Huddersfield Town during the latter half of the 2019/20 season. Smith-Rowe made 19 appearances for the Terriers and finished with two goals and three assists. Since returning to Arsenal from the loan, Smith-Rowe has performed very well with three assists in five Premier League appearances.
Nelson’s time away from the club has the potential to yield similar results and lead to more consistent appearances for the Gunners next season.
