Marcus Rashford could be out for the first two months of the Premier League season after deciding to go ahead with surgery on a shoulder injury, reports James Ducker on The Telegraph. The Manchester United and England forward suffered the injury last November and has been managing it ever since, but scans earlier this week showed a muscle tear.
Marcus Rashford Could Miss Start of Season
Current Injury State
The tear in Rashford’s shoulder is not expected to get any worse at this stage, therefore having surgery is not a major requirement. The fact he has been managing it for so long, though, is a concern to the striker as it has not go any better in the eight months since.
He has been on pain-killing injections, which clearly are not the right solution in the long-term, therefore surgery has been decided as the best course of action.
It seems like a sensible decision from Rashford to go ahead with surgery. The problem has been limiting his mobility for some time and there are worries that this could worsen if not treated.
Rashford has also played through injuries before which have come back to bite him. He tried to play through a stress fracture in his back but this subsequently became a double stress fracture due to aggravating the injury.
What Will He Miss?
Surgery is not likely to take place until the end of the month, and once completed it would be around six weeks before he could resume training, but another six before he could potentially be deemed match fit.
Spending up to 12 weeks on the sidelines means he would miss a good chunk of the group stages for Manchester United’s Champions League campaign as well as the first two international breaks, which would include England’s World Cup qualifiers against Hungary (home and away), Andorra (home and away) and Poland.
As well, he would likely miss United’s first eight league matches, which would include the home game against Leeds United on the opening day of the season.
