Not Serious

Aubameyang has not featured in either of Gabon’s games at the Africa Cup of Nations so far after he was diagnosed to be suffering from heart lesions and he will now return to Arsenal for further tests. According to Ornstein, the club have been in touch with the player and are said to be confident that the situation is not serious. The striker, who has been left out of recent Arsenal squads due to disciplinary issues, has recently had Covid-19 but had been back in training and was said to be feeling no ill effects from the virus.

Calm

The Athletic also stated that the Arsenal team doctor, who has been in touch with Aubameyang, had not felt that there would be any need for the player to return from the tournament but now they will monitor his next set of tests and then make a decision once more is known. The condition had initially come to light when Gabon medics carried out pre-match checks prior to the game against Ghana.

Arsenal Future

Aside from the latest developments with Aubameyang, there continues to be much speculation around his future at The Emirates Stadium. Despite scoring 92 goals in 163 games for the Gunners, his time has been blighted by talk of disciplinary issues and this led to manager Mikel Arteta stripping him of the club captaincy in December 2021. He had arrived late for one of the 2020/21 North London Derby matches and more recently returned late from a trip to France.

Since the stripping of the captaincy, Aubameyang has not played for the club and Arsenal may look to move him on in the January or summer transfer windows.
