Inter Milan have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Andre Onana on a free transfer. The Cameroonian shot-stopper was previously at Ajax but has had a deal in place with Inter for several months, as Fabrizio Romano reported. Onana was a crucial part of the Cameroon side that qualified for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar this December.

Latest in a Packed Transfer Window

Onana is the latest in a slew of players to make their way to the San Siro this summer. Former Arsenal and Manchester United man Henrikh Mkhitaryan will also sign on a free, and Kristjan Asllani’s arrival, on loan from Empoli, has been confirmed. The official addition of Onana comes just days after the high-profile return of striker Romelu Lukaku on loan from Chelsea.

The goalkeeper is tipped to be the long-term replacement for captain Samir Handanovic. The Slovenian turns 38 before the end of this month and has over 400 caps for Inter. At just 26, Onana should provide cover between the stick for the foreseeable future. He first shot to acclaim in the 2018/19 season, as part of the Ajax side that reached the Champions League semi-finals. That side included the likes of Frenkie De Jong, Matthijs de Ligt and Hakim Ziyech.

Now, with over 280 league and international caps to his name, the time has come to take the step up. Onana is a solid option in goal and is to be expected to move straight into the starting line-up for the new season.

Pushing for the Title

Inter will be keen to better last season’s performance. They finished second, missing out on a 20th Serie A title to city rivals AC Milan. They will also be looking to improve in Europe. Last year, they were knocked out by eventual runners-up Liverpool in the round of 16. But after working hard to recruit a host of top players, aims will almost certainly be higher.
