As Huddersfield Town search for a new manager to dig them out of trouble a few names are appearing as possibilities. Here we take a look at some of them and if they would be a good fit.
Huddersfield Town Continue Search For Next Manager
Potential Candidates Include Familiar Names
With the Terriers firmly rooted in the relegation zone having won only one of the eight games played so far, Danny Schofield was sacked earlier this month. So begins the search for a new permanent manager, someone who can take the club back up the table and to at least relatively safety of mid-table, if not higher.
It’s all a come down from last season, where the Terriers reached the play-off final, only to lose out to Nottingham Forest. Huddersfield Town then lost two of their best players to Forest and their manager walked, only to later take a position with Olympiacos – which he has even subsequently been sacked from.
These are some of the names being suggested as possible candidates to fill the now vacant hot-seat in Yorkshire.
David Wagner
Arguably the most successful manager of recent times for the Terriers. On his first stint in Yorkshire, Wagner took the Terriers to the promised land of the Premier League back in 2017. When the German joined in 2015, he was an unknown.
In his first season, Wagner secured a reputable 16th spot. The following season is something Town fans are still talking about. The magical season which saw them defeat Reading in the play-off final, to reach the Premier League.

After a two-season spell, however, the Terriers found themselves relegated back to the Championship and Wagner had left before the end of the second season.
Seemingly the bookies’ favourite, it could be a great move for Huddersfield to get Wagner back on board. There is the possibility, however, of it not being a successful second-coming and a tarnish to his first spell legacy.
The German has been a free agent since March and, if he is looking to get back into managing/coaching, then a club where he is known and loved would be a good move.
Duncan Ferguson
Ferguson’s name is one which has been thrown around very early in the search for a new manager. The former Scotland international took interim charge of Everton twice but left the Toffees to try and get into first team management as a permanent rather than temporary charge.
The Scot is very inexperienced as a full-time manager and could be a risky move for the Terriers. Based on their current position in the table, Huddersfield should be looking at someone with experience, as they have already tried a “green” manager in the form of Schofield, and this experiment didn’t work.
Although available, Huddersfield should steer away from Ferguson at this time which will disappoint the Scot who is hoping to find a full-time position somewhere.
Sean Dyche
The former Burnley manager is an interesting possibility. Having been sacked by the Clarets in April, Dyche is still without a managerial job. His brand of football never was the most exciting, but until the end of the 2021/22 season Dyche had kept Burnley in the Premier League. One of the more recent long-serving members, having been at Turf Moor for nine and a half years.
Although without a club at the moment, it’s not clear if Dyche wants a return to football management at this time; and even though it’s a possibility he could turn Huddersfield around, his style of play would not be welcomed to start with by Terrier fans.
Huddersfield Town fans like exciting football, with the players giving their all, even if the match ends in defeat. Something that has been lacking so far this season.
Paul Warne
A more Huddersfield Town type of candidate here, although Rotherham United would probably disagree. Warne has enjoyed success since joining the Millers in 2016. Yo-yoing between the Championship and League One is not particularly a reputation that a manager would want though.
A move across Yorkshire to the Terriers could help both Warne and Town this season. The football that Warne encourages at Rotherham is right up the street of Huddersfield Town fans, so he is likely to be welcomed warmly eventually.
If Huddersfield opt for Warne, it may be seen as a budget signing, rather than a bigger name – but would a bigger name be interested in digging the Terriers out of the hole they currently find themselves in?
