Manchester United have not given up their hopes of signing FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa in the future, confirms Fabrizio Romano. The Red Devils are yet to make a final decision on the future of their goalkeeping situation, with David de Gea’s contract expiring next year.

Manchester United Monitoring ‘Top Talent’ Diogo Costa
The Portuguese goalkeeper recently signed a new long-term contract with Porto, penning a five-year deal that expires in 2027. Within the deal, a release clause of around £52 million has also been inserted – which allows any club to sign him by paying a formidable amount in the future.
Romano adds that the Red Devils are well aware of this release clause and their opportunity to sign the 23-year-old by making him their most-expensive goalkeeper signing in history. Costa is still considered a top talent by those within Old Trafford after emerging in the European scene this year.

The Portuguese has made 18 appearances for Porto this season, keeping nine clean sheets and only conceding 15 goals across all competitions. That involves three clean sheets in six Champions League group games. Costa is also expected to be Portugal’s number one during the Qatar World Cup, having featured in the majority of their international matches in 2022.

United’s Goalkeeper Situation Explained
David de Gea has been the undisputed goalkeeper under Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, having featured in every single game this season. Their summer signing, Martin Dubravka, is yet to even get an appearance and is unlikely to remain at the club beyond the tenure of his loan spell.
Romano states that Dean Henderson, currently on loan at Nottingham Forest, is likely for different options in his career and leave United for good next summer. When it comes to the contract renewal of de Gea, Ten Hag will take the final decision on whether or not the Red Devils give him another long-term deal.

The Manchester side are aware of his contract expiring in 2023, but hold the option of triggering an automatic one-year clause on the contract. Unless the Spaniard is able to prove his ability to perform at the highest level for the foreseeable future, United might look to seriously make a move for Costa – a talent they highly appreciate.
