Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was left fuming after his side were not awarded a penalty following a strike from Alejandro Garnacho which hit Cristian Romero’s hand. The referees decided that the centre-back was too close to the winger and had his arm in a natural position, so a penalty was not awarded. However, the raised position of the defender’s hand led to frustration and criticism against the match officials.

In his post-match interview, the midfielder told Stadium Astro “It’s a clear penalty, no excuses for not seeing that, no excuses for the VAR to not see that”. He then went on to question whether Jon Moss, the manager of PGMOL, would apologise to the United dressing room as he had to Wolverhampton Wanderers following their season opener.

Moss had reportedly spoken to Gary O’Neil following a failure from VAR to intervene and award a clear penalty against Andre Onana late in the game at Old Trafford on Monday.

Erik ten Hag will be expected to make substantial changes to the lineup after his identical starting eleven encountered the same issues against Spurs that they had in their match with Wolves.

In particular, Casemiro found himself outnumbered and the midfield was dominated by their opposition in both fixtures, as Fernandes and Mason Mount struggled to make an impact. Despite their early struggles, United will go into their next game as clear favourites for the three points.
