What Are the Allegations Surrounding Antony
Antony’s ex-girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin has claimed that the Brazilian forward domestically abused her. Reports from the Mirror allege that he: “headbutted and punched her in a hotel room on January 14th”
Reported in the same article she further claims: “to have suffered a cut to her head and a damaged breast implant.”
Antony is currently under investigation by Greater Manchester Police and the Sao Paulo Police following the accusations of domestic abuse brought forward by his ex-girlfriend.
Antony’s Statement
Amid the allegations surrounding him, Antony took to Instagram on September 5 to release an official statement:
“Out of respect for my fans, friends and family I feel obligated to speak publicly about the false accusations I have been a victim of.
From the beginning I have handled this issue seriously and with respect, providing the due clarifications to the police authority. The police inquest is under cover of justice, and therefore I cannot make its content public.
However, I can say with confidence that the accusations are false and that the evidence already produced and more to be produced show that I am innocent of the accusations made. My relationship with Ms. Gabriela was tumultuous, with verbal offences from both sides, but I never practised any physical aggression.
Every time, whether in testimony or in interview, she presents a different version of the accusations.
Thus, I come to deny the accusations made and inform that I remain at the full disposal of the Brazilian authorities to clarify what is needed. I trust the ongoing police investigations will reveal the truth about my innocence.”
Brazil Dropping Antony From the International Squad
Following the accusations against the forward, Brazil have withdrawn him from the squad for the upcoming international fixtures.
A statement from the Brazilian Football Confederation read: “As a result of the facts that have come to light, and which need to be investigated, and in order to safeguard the supposed victim, the player, and the Brazilian national team the CBF have withdrawn [him] from the squad.”
Manchester United’s Official Statement
Manchester United were the latest to realise a statement across all parties, only just publically acknowledging their own player’s police investigation.
Their statement reads: “Manchester United acknowledges the allegations made against Antony and notes that the Police are conducting enquiries.
Pending further information, the club will be making no further comments. As a club, we are taking this matter seriously, with consideration of the impact of these allegations and subsequent reporting will have on survivors of abuse.”
Manchester United have remained vague and avoided making any decision on the matter. ESPN have reported that when they asked if Antony would be available to play for the club they refused to comment.
