Phil Foden claimed his first major individual award of the season on Friday, becoming the 77th player to be named the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year. The award significantly increases the 23-year-old’s chances of winning the Premier League Player of the Season trophy.

Injuries for Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne forced Pep Guardiola to use Foden in several attacking positions, and with fantastic results. The academy graduate has developed into a cornerstone of City’s attacking line as they pursue their defence of the Premier League and FA Cup titles.
Not an Up-And-Coming Star Anymore
Members of the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) voted for Foden as their pick for the Player of the Year award as he became the seventh Manchester City player to claim the prestigious title.

Reacting to Foden’s achievement, Pep Guardiola said: “Every year the amount of games and minutes he is playing, he is more mature. He understands the game. But he has to continue because he is still young.”
Seven years after making his debut for Man City, Foden is now a full-fledged Premier League star with 250 appearances under his belt for the Citizens. However, the FWA award is unlikely to be his last individual trophy of the season.
