Manchester United suffered their fourth loss of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign in just nine games in a 2-1 defeat to West Ham United on Sunday (27 October). That appears to have forced the hierarchy into sacking Erik ten Hag.
Erik ten Hag Sacked By Manchester United in Huge Decision
United’s Official Statement On Ten Hag
The Red Devils have had a really poor start to the new campaign, only being able to win four of their thirteen matches so far and the results have left them in 14th place in the Premier League table. As a result, United’s hierarchy have decided to relieve Ten Hag from his position as the first team manager “with immediate effect” ahead of the Carabao Cup fifth-round clash against Leicester City.

In an official statement, United stated: “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager. Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future. Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”
What Is Next for Manchester United?
The Red Devils have confirmed that Van Nistelrooy, who was roped in as Ten Hag’s assistant manager in the summer, will be the interim manager for the time being. However, they are likely to fast-track their attempts to role in a new head coach in the weeks to come. United will face Leicester in the Carabao Cup next before a home game against Chelsea before the November international break.

United have been linked to former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez, who is available to work after having left the Spanish club after the end of last season. Ten Hag leaves Old Trafford after having helped the Red Devils win the FA Cup and Carabao Cup titles over the last two years, and he also won 70 of 128 matches in his tenure.
