Toby Alderweireld and the unsigned contract
Since Toby Alderweireld signed from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2015. There has been few better center backs in the Premier League. The Belgium international has been a major part of Tottenham’s recent success. The former Ajax man’s current deal runs out in 2020 and with the Belgian still not tied down to a new deal, Spurs fans are growing concerned.
Agent talk
Spurs have a strict wage structure which is good for the long term stability of the club. However, this policy leaves them vulnerable to having players lured away to rivals by money. Salaries aren’t generally published but it is widely rumoured that Alderweireld is poorly remunerated compared to lesser defenders at rivals. The agent of Toby Alderweireld has reportedly given Tottenham the ultimatum of “pay him what he’s worth and put him on par with the top earners at Tottenham of sell him”. Alderweireld’s agent made these comments a week after the summer transfer window closed. This should be considered a good thing as it indicates he may prefer to stay at Spurs but the fact his agent has been adopted these tactics is slightly worrying for Tottenham fans.
Squad value
Many would argue that Toby Alderweireld is among the three most important players at the club Alongside Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane. It is natural he would want to be among the top earners. Dele Alli is reportedly in talks over a new £100,000 a week deal (although this has been denied as a rumour by Mauricio Pochettino) and considering Alderweireld is rumoured to be on less than this then the club must be cautious not to insult him by not offering the Belgian a similar deal. The prospect of losing a player of the quality of Toby Alderweireld who has been remarkably consistent during his spell so far would be anathema to Tottenham supporters.
Toby Alderweireld the savior of Lloris
No one at Tottenham will have appreciated the arrival of Toby Alderweireld as much as Captain Hugo Lloris.
Prior to signing Alderweireld,Tottenham had conceded 53 goals in the 2014/15 season and 51 goals the year before. Fast forward 2 years and spurs have conceded under 36 goals in consecutive seasons. This is not coincidental,Alderweireld and Vertonghen now form one of the most formidable defenses in world football and with the addition of fellow former Ajax star Davinson Sanchez, Spurs now have a beautiful mix of grit and style.
Over To You Mr.Levy
If Alderweireld does leave the club due to wages it will be extremely difficult for Tottenham to find a like for like replacement. Financially it is not possible for Tottenham to compete for players of such high quality given how the transfer market has moved. Tottenham have a world class player who appears happy to stay. All that is needed is for club, player and agent to find some common ground
