The Nashville Predators announced Friday night that they have re-signed defenseman Matt Irwin to a one-year contract extension. The deal is worth $650,000 and locks the 29 year old in for the 2017-18 National Hockey League season.

Nashville Predators Re-sign Defenceman Matt Irwin
Irwin has appeared in 32 games for the Predators this season, tallying three goals and adding five assists for eight points. Irwin played two seasons of college hockey at the University of Massachusetts from 2007-08. He scored 42 points in 67 games with UMass. Prior to college, he spent three seasons in the British Columbia Hockey League for the Nanaimo Clippers. There, he was named Coastal Conference Defenseman of the Year and the the BCHL’s all-star team in 2007-08.
Irwin went undrafted but was signed by the San Jose Sharks. After a couple of seasons with the AHL’s Worchester Sharks, he made his NHL debut with the San Jose Sharks in 2012. He remained with San Jose until 2015. He then signed with the Boston Bruins for the 2015-16 season, and signed again, this time with the Predators for this upcoming season. Irwin has played in a career total of 187 games. He has netted 19 goals and has added 58 assists. He has been a valuable asset for the Preds, playing a solid top four defensive role and has filled in excellently since the absence of P.K. Subban (injury). Irwin plays smart defense and is physical on the fore-check.
