New York Rangers Re-Sign Brendan Lemieux

Brendan Lemieux

The New York Rangers have signed free agent winger Brendan Lemieux to a one-year contract. Financials on the deal have not yet been released by the Rangers. This contract carries him through the 2019-2020 season.

Brendan Lemieux Heading to the Big Apple

Over his two-year NHL career, Lemieux has played for the Winnipeg Jets and New York Rangers. He has put up 13 goals and five assists for 18 career points in 72 career games. He was originally drafted in the second round, 31st overall of the 2014 NHL Draft by the Buffalo Sabres.

Last season he scored 12 goals and five assists for 17 points. He also added 108 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 45.1 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of -2.2.

What This Means for the Future

Lemieux was acquired by the Rangers in the deal that sent Kevin Hayes to the Jets. The 23-year-old winger adds depth to the Rangers line-up. He has strong lower-body strength which makes it hard for opponents to get the puck off of his stick. One thing Lemieux will have to work on is staying out of the penalty box as he had the fifth-most penalty minutes in the entire league last season. However, he could be a guy who could put up a sneaky 15-20 goals next season if he manages to solidify his spot in the line-up. It will be interesting to see how Lemieux fairs in his first full season with the Blueshirts.

The Rangers also announced that they have signed center Micheal Haley to A PTO. Haley played in 43 games last year splitting time between the Florida Panthers and San Jose Sharks. He recorded two goals and four assists for six points over that time. He has put up 10 goals and 21 assists for 31 points in 248 career games.
