New York Rangers Re-Sign Goaltender Alexandar Georgiev

Alexandar Georgiev

The New York Rangers have signed restricted free agent goaltender Alexandar Georgiev to a 2-year contract worth $4.85 million, or $2.425 million per season. This contract carries him through the 2021-22 season.

Alexandar Georgiev Re-Signs With the New York Rangers

The Rangers keep their strong backup goaltender. Over his 3-year NHL career, Georgiev has played exclusively for the New York Rangers. He has put up a 35-31-7 career record in 77 career appearances with 71 career starts. He also has a 3.00 goals-against average, 0.913 save percentage, and 4 shutouts. Georgiev has yet to record a game in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Last season, Georgiev played in 34 games with 32 starts for the New York Rangers. He put up a 17-14-2 record with a 3.04 goals-against average and 0.910 save percentage and 2 shutouts. Georgiev did not get a start in the New York Rangers 2019-20 play-in round, losing the position to fellow Rangers goaltenders Igor Shesterkin and Henrik Lundqvist.

What This Means for the Future

The Rangers solidify their goaltending for the next two seasons, committing to a Georgiev and Shesterkin duo after the buyout of longtime starter Henrik Lundqvist. Shesterkin began to assert himself as the team’s current and future starter after being called up from the AHL. It seems like moving forward Georgiev will be either the backup or the 1B goaltender to Shesterkin.

Georgiev has had respectable results as the Rangers backup for the past few seasons. With the ability to steal a hockey game, Georgiev has proven his ability in the NHL. At just 24 years old, Georgiev is still young enough to continue growing into a stronger goaltender with the ability to become a starter someday. While he isn’t seen as the future of goaltending on the Rangers, he still can continue to develop as the years go on.
