The Carolina Hurricanes have agreed to trade Alex Galchenyuk to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Egor Korshkov and David Warsofsky. News of the deal broke early Monday evening. This is the second deal the 27-year-old has been involved in as he was dealt from the Ottawa Senators on Saturday.

Maple Leafs Pick Up Alex Galchenyuk
The Maple Leafs sent forward Egor Korshkov and defenceman David Warsofsky to the Hurricanes in exchange for forward Alex Galchenyuk on Monday. Warsofsky came to Toronto as part of the Kasperi Kapanen deal to the Pittsburgh Penguins while Korshkov is playing with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in the KHL.

In Galchenyuk, the Leafs get a player that can shore up their forward depth. This season, he has one goal for one point in eight games played. The Milwaukee, Wis. native also has six penalty minutes this season. His possession numbers are 42.0 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of -12.2. Those totals are down compared to last season, where he scored eight goals, 16 assists for 24 points in 59 total games with the Penguins and Minnesota Wild.

Over his nine-year NHL career, Galchenyuk has played for the Montreal Canadiens, Arizona Coyotes, Penguins, Wild and Senators. He never suited up for the Hurricanes in his short time with the club. In that time, he has 136 goals and 185 assists for 321 career points in 557 career games. Montreal took him with the third overall pick in the 2012 NHL Draft.
What This Means for the Future
Galchenyuk won’t have to quarantine as he was still in Canada at the time of the trade. Insiders did warn that Carolina would try to move the centre at some point. The forward didn’t depart for the United States to report to Canada to join the Hurricanes organization. He went through waivers unclaimed and was assigned to the Chicago Wolves.
The Leafs hope the American can find some of the touch that netted him a career-high 30 goals with the Habs in the 2015-16 season. He’s hoping to land a regular place in the lineup and give the Leafs some cover while Wayne Simmonds recovers.
