Canada Wins Gold At Women’s Worlds
For the first time since 2012, Canada has won gold in the IIHF Women’s Worlds. After losing to the United States four consecutive times and getting bronze in 2019, the wait is finally over. But that doesn’t mean it was an easy game.
It started quite disastrous for the Canadians, with two U.S goals in little more than three minutes. Alex Carpenter opened the score in a bad rebound by the Canadian goaltender, Ann-Renee Desbiens. Shortly after that, Jocelyne Larocque took a penalty and once again, Carpenter scores for the Americans. But it was just the first period and there was no reason to panic. Canada continued to put pressure but couldn’t score before the buzzer sounded to end the first.
The game started to change when Canada got an early period power play and Brianne Jenner took the chance she had to score. Right after, Jamie Lee Rattray tied the game with a beautiful tip-in right in front of Nicole Hensley. Both teams managed to keep the game tied and carry it to the third period. With brilliant performances from both Hensley and Desbiens, the gold medal game went to be decided in overtime.
Marie-Philip Poulin Is The Overtime Hero
However, what could have lasted for 20 entire minutes – and more – was ended in only seven. The Team Canada captain, Marie-Philip Poulin, scored the gold medal goal with a beautiful assist by Brianne Jenner, putting Poulin almost in front of Hensley. It took video review to confirm that Poulin did, in fact, put the puck inside the net but a few seconds later, the buzzer sounded and Canada was able to have their celebration!

Marie-Philip Poulin’s goal put an end to the five-year winning streak in the IIHF Women’s World Championship for the United States.
