Report: Tuukka Rask Expected to Nix Comeback Attempt, Announce Retirement

Tuukka Rask Retirement

Tuukka Rask, the longtime Boston Bruins goaltender, is not expected to continue his comeback attempt and will likely announce his retirement. Sources close to Rask say that the 34-year old has not felt great since his return, stemming from his offseason hip surgery to correct a torn labrum. Rask has not suited up for the Bruins since January 24th, where he let in five goals on 27 shots.

Tuukka Rask Considering Retirement

The 34-year old veteran goaltender signed a 1-year deal with the Bruins back on January 11th. During that first game, Bruins fans were treated to a classic Rask performance. Stopping 25 of 27 shots, Rask led the Bruins to a 3-2 win that night over the Philadelphia Flyers. After that game, it was all smiles for the Boston Bruins. Rask said he had no physical issues before, during, or after the game, and seemed to be picking up where he had left off this past season. However, the fast start did not last long.

In Rask’s next start, he allowed five goals on only 12 shots, resulting in coach Bruce Cassidy pulling him in the first period. Despite this display, the Bruins gave Rask another opportunity to shine against the Winnipeg Jets. Rask seemed back to his old ways again in that contest. His game was highlighted with 22 saves en route to a 3-2 Bruins victory. This victory against the Jets, however, appears to be the last win of Rask’s career.

Injuries Forcing Goalies Into Retirement

It’s no secret that injuries are more difficult to come back from the older a player gets. Earlier this season, Stars goaltender Ben Bishop was forced into retirement due to a lingering knee injury that had plagued him throughout his career. If Tuukka Rask does announce his retirement, it is an unfortunate end to what has been an incredible tenure in black-and-gold. Rask is the winningest goaltender in Bruins history. Despite this failed comeback attempt, his number will surely hang in the TD Garden rafters sometime soon.
