The Buffalo Sabres announced forward Victor Olofsson has signed his contract with the team. He was a restricted free agent with arbitration rights. The contract is two years with an average value of $4.75 million.

Forward Victor Olofsson Signs New Contract
The 26-year-old has played four seasons in the NHL since 2018-19, all with the Buffalo Sabres. Throughout 188 regular-season games played, he has 55 goals, 72 assists and 127 points. During the 2021-22 season, he had a career-high of in points and games played with 49 in 72 games.
Olofsson was fourth in the team in power-play points, with 12, and third in power-play goals, with seven. He also ranked fourth in points, behind Tage Thompson, Jeff Skinner and Rasmus Dahlin. The Swede is an important piece of the Sabres’ power play and led the team in game-winning goals with six. He was selected 181st overall in the seventh round of the 2014 NHL Draft.
What This Means For The Sabres
General manager Kevyn Adams has said multiple times that his main goal is to rebuild around their young players. Olofsson is included in that plan. Even though he’s already 27, Olofsson has only three seasons with more than 50 games played and he’s an important part of their core. Now a veteran, he played well with Thompson, Skinner, Dylan Cozens and Rasmus Asplund, all of which are key players for the team. Keeping Olofsson means one less winger to sign in this offseason. It also means they’re looking to keep developing their own players instead of going fishing for others via trade or free agency.
There was a lot of noise about him possibly getting traded. However, for now, he stays in the Sabres system. Olofsson is yet another signing for the Buffalo Sabres, with players such as Sean Malon and goaltender Craig Anderson both having new contracts for the next season. What comes next is still to be seen, as they still need to sign a handful of defencemen, forwards and goaltenders to fill up their roster and reach the cap floor. But these three are a good start to the offseason.
