An offer sheet is an NHL contract that is offered from one team to another team’s restricted free agent. If a player chooses to sign an offer sheet with another NHL team, their original team has two options. The club can decide either to match the offer sheet, which means they agree to the signed contract as-is, or they can choose not to match. If a club elects not to match, the player joins the other team. The offer sheet then becomes the new contract. In return, the original team gets draft pick compensation from the signing team.
Due to the draft pick compensation, teams are typically hesitant to tender an offer sheet. The most recent was Jesperi Kotkaniemi in 2021.
Offer Sheet Terms
The Blues have offered Broberg a two-year contract with an annual cap hit of roughly $4.6 million. In addition, Holloway has been offered a two-year contract with an annual cap hit of roughly $2.3 million.
If Broberg agrees to the offer sheet and the Oilers do not match, the Blues will owe the Oilers a second-round pick. Furthermore, the Blues will owe the Oilers a third-round pick for Holloway. Again, this depends on if one or both players accept and the Oilers choose to not match.
Minutes before the Blues announced they had tendered offer sheets, the team has completed a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The trade was a swap of draft picks. The Blues completed this trade in order to obtain the compensation picks they have have to give to the Oilers.
The Penguins have acquired a 2026 second-round draft pick and a 2025 third-round draft pick.

Broberg and Holloway
Broberg has only played in 81 NHL games, with a career-high of 46 in the 2022-23 season. He is a left-handed shot. While the Blues have plenty of them on their roster, there is some uncertainty who will be available to play, particularly Torey Krug.
Holloway has played in 89 NHL games and has scored nine goals. While neither play has done a whole lot in their young NHL career, the Blues clearly see potential in both.
