Hockey is back! Normally we’d be closing in on the NHL trade deadline for the final push of the season. However, we’re in a different world. Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date’s historical significance to the game. We’ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here’s our look at this date in hockey history for February 12th featuring Bill Cowley.

Today in Hockey History

Bill Cowley Becomes All-Time Leading Scorer

1947: The Boston Bruins centre gets a goal to become the league’s all-time leading scorer in a 10-1 rout of the New York Rangers. Cowley notches his 529th career point to pass the recently retired Syd Howe for first place.

The Bristol, Quebec native retires at the end of the season with 548 career points. He enters the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1968 and was the only player elected in the class that year.

Other Notable Events
