Montreal Canadiens Tyler Toffoli Out Two Months After Hand Surgery

Montreal Canadiens forward Tyler Toffoli will be out two months after surgery on his hand. The club announced the news on Saturday afternoon. Toffoli had his hand surgery on Wednesday.

Tyler Toffoli Out With Hand Injury

It’s not specific when Toffoli suffered his hand injury, but he last played in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Nashville Predators on Dec. 4. The  Scarborough, Ontario native had five goals and 12 assists for 17 points in 26 games this season. His Corsi for is 56.2 while his relative Corsi is 10.8.

Over his 10-year NHL career, Toffoli has played for the Los Angles Kings, Vancouver Canucks and the Canadiens. He 178 goals and 183 assists for 361 points in 603 career games. Los Angeles originally drafted him in the second round, 47th overall of the 2010 NHL Draft.

The 29-year-old has a Stanley Cup with the 2014 Kings and helped Team Canada win gold at the 2015 IIHF World Championships. His best season was when he scored 31 goals with Los Angeles in the 2015-16 season. He played a hand in the Canadiens run to the Stanley Cup Final last season with 28 regular season goals and five in the post-season.

What it Means

It’s another blow for a team that’s suffered a ton of them this season. Montreal has lost 180 man games as of Dec. 9 and Toffoli’s injury is just another one to add to the pile.

Laurent Dauphin had been called up to replace Toffoli. Since then Christian Dvorak has also been out with an injury leading to Jesse Ylonen’s recall. Jake Evans was also listed as day-to-day for the club.

It’s been a season of turmoil as the Canadiens shook up the front office by firing general manager Marc Bergevin. Jeff Gorton has been hired to find the team’s next general manager and take stock of what the Habs have. The team is closer to being in position to draft for Shane Wright than it is to make the post-season.
