Detroit Red Wings Make Two Signings

Detroit Red Wings signings

General manager Steve Yzerman has started things early with a pair of Detroit Red Wings signings. Detroit has signed newly acquired forward Klim Kostin and defenceman Gustav Lindstrom to a one-year contract. News of the signings broke on Saturday morning.

Kostin, Lindstrom Among Detroit Red Wings Signings

Kostin was recently acquired from the Edmonton Oilers along with forward Kailer Yamamoto earlier in the week. The big forward signed a two-year deal worth $4 million. Kostin has played for the St. Louis Blues and Edmonton Oilers during his four-year NHL career. The Russian power forward scored 11 goals and got 10 assists for 21 points in 57 games last season for Edmonton. St. Louis originally drafted Kostin in the first round, 31st overall of the 2017 NHL Draft.

Lindstrom inked a one-year pact worth $950,000 to stay with the club. He was initially not given a qualifying offer, but the two sides quickly worth out a new contract. The 24-year-old blueliner netted a goal and seven assists for eight points in 36 games with the Red Wings. Lindstrom split time with the big club and the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins. Detroit originally took the Swede in the second round, 38th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft.

Impact of Detroit Red Wings Signings

Kostin gives the Wings a bit of size and he put in some timely goals for the Oilers last season. He can use his body and throw his weight around if he needs to.

Lindstrom is another young defender in a Red Wings blueline group that is trying to improve. Moritz Seider leads the group, but the team needs contributions if the team wants to take the next step forward.

Detroit has missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs the last seven seasons, but there are some encouraging signs with the group. Head coach Derek LaLonde will be in his second season and hopes to get the club challenging for a playoff spot.
