Major League Baseball (MLB)
is the professional sports league for the game that was perennially referred to as “America’s Pastime” — baseball. It is the oldest major professional sports league in the United States and Canada, and one of North America’s three sporting leagues with teams in both countries.
At present, there are a total of 30 teams in MLB, split evenly with 15 teams playing in two divisions referred to as the American League (AL) and National League (NL). These two leagues were formed back in 1879 and 1901, and after originally existing as independent leagues, they merged into one single league that competes against each other in a championship match known as the World Series. At present, teams currently play a 162-game schedule, which currently runs from late-March or the beginning of April, to early-to-mid October each year. The baseball postseason begins after that.
The first professional baseball team was founded in Cincinnati, in 1869. However, the nascent league didn’t really garner the excitement that we’re accustomed to seeing today, as players rarely hit the high-scoring “home runs” (where the ball is hit out of the field of play). Coupled with the infamous “Black Sox” scandal of 1919, in which there was a conspiracy in which that year’s World Series was believed to be fixed, the sport limped along for a few more years, before ironically beginning to capture the interest of sports fans in both countries amidst the economic downturn of the 1920’s and the two World Wars that happened during and after that time frame.
Building on that popularity, MLB began a series of expansion in the 1950’s and 1960’s, with new stadiums built on new types of sporting turfs, and players of increasing skill level beginning to play in and on these fields. The sport continued to grow from there, easily becoming the country’s most important sport until perhaps the 1980’s. However, with the rise of the National Football League, coupled with a series of staggering scandals in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s around the rampant use of players using performance enhancing drugs, the sport has been struggling to capture back the attention of fans, which it once used to dominate.
MLB Competition and Final Events
The World Series is the yearly championship match between the winning representative of the American League and the National League. The winner of the World Series is the team who is the first to win four games in the series that goes a maximum of seven games. The winner is awarded the Commissioner’s Trophy, as World Series champions.
At the conclusion of the 2017 World Series, the split between the two leagues is 65 to 48, in favor of the AL over the NL. The New York Yankees have historically been one of the most dominant teams throughout the history of baseball, having played in 40 total World Series and winning 27 of those. Compare that to teams like the Philadelphia Phillies, Kansas City Royals, and Oakland Athletics, who have combined to appear in 14 World Series, and win nine of them.
Biggest News To Date
In November of 2017, the Houston Astros won their first World Series championship in the history of the franchise. Many people believe that they are also the favorites to win the World Series again this year, in large part, because they are returning a vast majority of the players from last year’s rosters. Professional oddsmakers have placed the Astros among the top three teams to win the World Series.
For all the additions made by the New York Yankees, and for all the talent that still remains with other contenders like the Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox, the Houston Astros did what made the most sense to them, and most others: keeping the group that won it all last year intact. Outside of the retirement of Carlos Beltran, and the defection of a few role players from last year’s squad, the 2018 version of the Astros will look almost identical to the one that won 101 of 162 games in 2017.
