Formula E – Preview of the 2018 Rome E-Prix

The inaugural Formula E 2018 Rome E-Prix kicks off the European portion of the calendar this weekend (April 14,2018). Round seven will be held at the Circuito Cittadino Dell’EUR in the EUR district of Rome, Italy. The Formula E Rome E-Prix will bring the electric racing series to the Italian capital for the first time.

The Circuit

The Circuito Cittadino dell’EUR is the second longest track in the calendar at 2.84 km (1.76 miles) in length. The circuit consists of 21 turns, with the start finish line located on Via Cristoforo Colombo. The cars will be racing around the Obelisco di Marconi, a beautiful marble-concrete structure. Furthermore, they will be racing against the backdrop of the iconic Colosseo Quadrato.

Drivers to Watch

Although Jean-Eric Vergne holds a big lead in the Driver’s Championship, he will be looking for another win. Techeetah hold onto a narrow lead over Mahindra Racing and DS Virgin Racing. So, they will be looking for a good result from both their drivers Vergne and Andre Lotterer. Lotterer will be looking for a better result this time around. After plummeting down to twelfth in the Punta del Este E-Prix, he will need to avoid doing that.

Furthermore, Lucas Di Grassi of Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler will try to maintain his good form. After a second place finish in Punta del Este, he will try to replicate that result. Although Daniel Abt looked strong in Punta del Este, his race unraveled quickly.   An unfortunate seat belt malfunction led Abt to pit again and his race was ruined.

Also, Felix Rosenqvist of Mahindra Racing will be looking for a race win to move him up the standings. The Swede sits only thirty points behind Vergne and could cut into that gap in Rome. After a fifth-place finish at the Punta del Este E-Prix, he will need some luck. Additionally, his teammate Nick Heidfeld will be looking for some luck in Rome. After a DNF in Punta del Este, he will be looking to finish this race and gain some points for Mahindra Racing.

In addition, Sam Bird of DS Virgin Racing sits third in the championship and is only three points behind Rosenqvist. The Briton placed third at Punta del Este after starting tenth from the grid. His teammate Alex Lynn, placed sixth in Punta del Este and will be looking for a better result this time in Rome.
