After yet another disappointing Grand Prix, Sergio Perez was not the most joyful figure when speaking to the media post-race. Perez was particularly unhappy with Liam Lawson, who he believes crossed the line in their duel at Mexico City.
Perez critical of Lawson’s attitude since returning to F1
It is no secret that Liam Lawson is fighting to secure Sergio Perez’s Red Bull seat. This has been stated explicitly by Christian Horner and Helmut Marko on numerous occasions.
Perhaps because of this, the duel between Lawson and Perez in Mexico City was an intense one. Both drivers had their elbows out, which eventually resulted in damage for the Red Bull driver.
Later in the race, after Lawson made his mandatory stop, the Kiwi gave Perez the middle finger as he overtook him on the main straight.
According to the 6-time race winner, Lawson needs to change his attitude:
“I think the way he has come to Formula 1, I don’t think he has the right attitude for it,” Perez told the media post-race.
“He needs to be a little more humble.
“He needs to be a bit more humble. When a two-time World Champion [Alonso] was saying things last weekend, he completely ignored him.
“It’s like when you come to Formula 1, you’re obviously very hungry and so on. But you have to be respectful as well, off and on track.
“I don’t think he’s showing the right attitude to show a good pace for himself. Because I think he’s a great driver, and I hope for him that he can step back and learn from it.
“In is first Grand Prix he has had too many incidents. I think there will be a point where it can cost him.”
These comments will be heavily analysed and dissected in the build-up to this weekend’s Brazilian GP.
In the background of the media coverage for this incident, Red Bull have big decision to make about their 2025 driver line-up.
Based on Christian Horner’s comments on Sunday, changes are being considered by the Milton Keynes squad.
