As free agency approaches in the NFL off-season Tyrod Taylor faces an uncertain future. A recent report from CBS Sports says the Buffalo Bills have expressed interest in obtaining Tony Romo. It looks more and more like the Bills are looking to part ways with Taylor. Buffalo retaining Taylor means a 15.9 million dollar cap hit for the 2017 season. Taylor himself seems to be taking the situation in stride saying, “My focus is not on the contract situation or what’s gonna happen. It’s more just being healthy. The thing that keeps my mind off of it is rehabbing [from January groin surgery]. If I didn’t have to rehab, I’d probably be thinking about [the contract situation] all the time.” Though Taylor mat not end up staying in Buffalo there are a few teams that present a desirable situation for him to land.
Possible Landing Spots for Tyrod Taylor
Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos currently have three quarterbacks on their roster. However, none of them have proven themselves to any better than Tyrod Taylor. Trevor Siemian is a manageable quarterback with a decent arm but does not possess the mobility that Taylor does. As a veteran player Taylor would be a great mentor for a young Paxton Lynch. He will be able to show him how to be disciplined on and off the field. Mark Sanchez is just on the team to hold a clip board, and he will not even be on the roster come training camp. With the strength of the Denver defense Taylor can play a perfect compliment to a staggering Broncos offense. He has the arm and deep-ball accuracy to create a big play threat. Also, his ability to extend plays will allow more opportunities for Emmanuel Sanders. Regardless of whom Denver plays at quarterback, next season they will need to improve up front first.
Washington Redskins
Kirk Cousins is due to make around 23 million next season on the open market. Last season, cousins earned 19,953,000 million with the Washington Redskins on a one year deal that didn’t quite make sense. New San Francisco 49ers General Manager John Lynch said “You’ve got to take your head off the figure, off the number. I think that scares people. That’s the going rate, folks. You may not like it, but it’s the going rate for good quarterbacks. This guy is a really good quarterback. He’s earned the right, in my mind, to be the Redskins’ quarterback moving forward.” That being said, if the Redskins do not decide to pay Cousins he will find that money somewhere else. Though Tyrod Taylor does no possess the accuracy of Cousins, he could be an ideal replacement for Washington. Constant deep threat DeSean Jackson will cohere to one of Taylor strengths. This will in turn help open up running lanes for Robert Kelley and the rest of the Redskins backfield.
New York Jets
The New York Jets may be the surprise team in this situation. Ryan Fitzpatrick and the organizations relationship has broken down. Christian Hackenberg appears in no way ready to take over the starting role. This is the dark horse no one is considering with Taylor. With weapons such as Eric Decker and Brandon Marshall to throw too and Matt Forte in the backfield Taylor can be a nice compliment to that offense. The only downfall to this scenario is the Jets salary cap situation. With only around 7.4 million available in cap space the Jets would have to make some moves to free up money for Taylor. However, this is not out of the question. The Jets do have some options to free space during free agency.
