James Conner, Arizona Cardinals, Agree To Contract
James Conner was arguably the best-value player in the NFL in 2021. Playing on a one-year, $1.75 million deal, Conner was one of Arizona’s best and most consistent players last season. With injuries to other key stars, he became the De Facto top running back in Arizona, and carried a faltering offense through the back end of the season. Conner led the Cardinals in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, and total touchdowns. He also ranked second in the league in both rushing and total touchdowns in 2021.
Conner signed with Arizona as a free agent after the Pittsburgh Steelers opted not to re-sign him last off-season. Prior to that, though, Conner had been a star in Pittsburgh. He was a three-year starter, and he battled through a number of injuries, including one to his shoulder that limited him to career-lows in both yards and games in 2019. His health in 2019 prevented him from replicating his stellar 2018 season. That season, Conner replaced holdout Le’Veon Bell as Pittsburgh’s starter and, in only his second year, was named a Pro Bowl starter on the back of a 973-yard season. Conner had previously backed up Bell as a rookie.
Prior to the NFL, Conner, a Pennsylvania native, attended The University of Pittsburgh. During his college career, his battle with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma was widely publicized. After a promising sophomore campaign, Conner tore his MCL as a junior, and it was during the rehab that his cancer was discovered. However, Conner made a full recovery and returned for the 2016 season. After eclipsing the 1,000-yard mark for the second time in his college career, Conner declared early eligibility for the 2017 Draft. He was a third-round pick for the hometown Steelers.
